The red panda is also called a panda. So, I think we call them giant pandas to distinguish them from red pandas (who are also really cute by the way) and because they are a lot larger than red pandas haha.
FYI, their original name is “Ailuropoda melanoleuca”, literally meaning “black and white cat-foot”.
